No peeking!

I never, ever peeked at my Christmas presents as a child.  And not just because I was a good kid.  I mean, I was a good kid, but that's not the point.  I just never wanted to know ahead of time.  I think anticipating the presents is just as much fun as opening them.

I have heard some funny stories about kids who got into their presents ahead of time though.  For instance, one of my brother's friends in high school told the story of how she and her brother got into their presents, which were already wrapped.  They carefully unwrapped each gift and looked and then started wrapping them back up.  But apparently at some point during the "wrapping them back up" part they ran out of tape.  At which point they moved on (thinking they were still being so sneaky) to using elmer's glue.  Neon colored elmer's glue.  Yeah, pretty sure that didn't fool anyone.

So what about you?  Did you peek?

  1. My husband tells the story of how he discovered his parents had hidden a toy racetrack in the closet, so when they would go to church on Saturday evenings, he would beg off to go with his sister on Sunday so he could use the time to get out the track, set it up, play with it, and put it all away before they got home. He actually got away with it!

  2. I never, ever peek. But I absolutely use all legal methods to try to figure out what is in the packaging, including one year posting pictures of all the packages on my blog. Trying to figure it out and seeing if I am correct is most of the fun.

I am also currently involved in a great project to figure out who my moms club secret Santa is. And I WILL figure it out. I am nosy and sneaky and I fully embrace those parts of myself.

  3. Definitely not a peeker. That would spoil the fun! (Plus, my the time I reached middle school I pretty much picked out all of my Christmas presents and already knew what I was getting.)

  4. I also never, ever peek. I am a big fan of both anticipating and prolonging the fun, so why would I look?

That said, I read every spoiler I can get my hands on for TV shows. And I've been know to skip ahead in suspenseful books (though never Harry Potter or the like). I have no idea why I feel so differently, but there it is.

  5. The only time I've ever peeked was when I was about 5 years old, I crawled out of my room into the loft and saw mom and dad putting together the fooseball table. The next morning when the tag read "From Santa" I knew he wasn't real. Not a huge letdown. Now I definitely don't peek. I actually like to give Jonathan my list and then forget what's on it so it's all a surprise (kinda).

  6. I always (and still do) peak at any present that is in a bag. I just peel all the top off of the top, look, then put some back on. I figure if the person puts it in a bag it is fair game. I'm pretty sure my mom always knew I did it but she never did say anything.

  7. I never peek. I don't shake the box. I don't want to know! My husband used to unwrap his presents and then rewrap them. He has mad skills.

  8. I like to be taunted/teased about what I'm getting...I love the anticipation. But, when push comes to shove, I don't want to know. I remember hiding from my mom once when I was little, and then realizing they were about to discuss my gifts and didn't know I was there...I covered my hands and didn't take them off for a long time.

  9. This is a topic that has occupied much of my mind the last week or so as my husband has my Christmas present hidden in the closet in his office. I know it's there but I've also never been a peeker. I LOVE having that surprise on Christmas morning. I don't want anything to ruin it.

My sister always was a peeker and would even try to ruin my present for me. She would try to shout out what I was getting as I sat with my hands over my ears and hummed to myself. . .yeah.

    Happy Holidays!! :)

  10. I've never been a peeker. I don't want to open anything early, either. Delayed gratification for me!
