A Thanksgiving related question

Here's what I want to know: how many of you make your own pie crust?  (I also wrote about this at Food Lush today, but I am very curious.)  I grew up in a house that made pie.  A LOT.  I mean, when you have cherry, apple, and peach trees in your back yard pie is sort of a necessity.  And we always made the crust.  So I grew up thinking that's what people did.

I've always sort of equated it with buying prepared cookie dough.  I was aware that you could do it, but not sure why people would since 1) making it isn't hard and 2) the homemade product is FAR superior.  But the subject of pie is big right now (what with Thanksgiving being tomorrow and all)  and I keep hearing about how nobody wants to make pie crust.  So do you make pie crust?  And if not, why not?

  1. Nope. I actually think the local-store-brand frozen crusts are indistinguishable from homemade. And obviously way easier. I don't like premade roll-out crusts, though.

  2. I don't really like pie, so we don't have it for dessert. When I make quiche, I buy the pie crust. It's easy and comes with the pie pans!

  3. I'm sorry to admit that I don't even know how to make pie crust! Isn't that insane? But I also don't buy it. We just don't have pie :)

  4. That's it Kari, you're kicked out of this family.

  5. I buy it...out of sheer laziness. It's already "work" to make the pie and buying the crust is one less step! :)

  6. Um, are you trying to rub salt in my wounds?! JK I prefer the taste of pre-made crusts to the ones I've made. Maybe this is just because I grew up on pre-made and I'm used to the taste? Or I think I often don't roll it thin enough. I've always used butter and I'm going to try shortening this time around so we'll see how that goes.

  7. I almost never make pie, but when I do I buy the crust. It's pretty much the only non-scrach thing in our family.

  8. I WANT to make my own pie crust but it is hard to get it to come out right and very messy! I suppose if I practiced enough, I might be able to get it, but there just doesn't seem to be much time for practicing things like that these days =(!

  9. I always always always make my own crust. I use an all-butter recipe from Smitten Kitchen and have grown quite smug about my superior crust.
