A question

When did you transition your kids from a crib to a bed?  I've heard that the ideal transition age is between 2 1/2 and 3 years old and Kalena is right there.  But she doesn't want to sleep in a bed, she wants to sleep in her crib.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining.  I am oh so grateful that we don't have to fight the "getting out of bed" fight.  Putting her in bed and knowing she'll stay there is excellent.  She's never climbed out of her crib, so I don't have to worry about her falling and hurting herself.

Part of me wants to wait until she's dropped her nap before transitioning, to avoid having to deal with her getting out of bed at naptime.  I really don't know when she'll drop her nap though.  She's still napping every afternoon for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, so as of now she still definitely needs one.  (I guess that's what happens when you get up at the crack of dawn.)

Also, as I said, she doesn't want to sleep in a bed.  We offer sometimes, since there's already a twin bed in her room, and occasionally she'll say yes, but it only lasts a few minutes before she wants in her crib.  (Interestingly, she doesn't actually get out of the bed, she just cries until one of us goes in to get her.)  So how do we get around that?  We're thinking that maybe making her crib into a toddler bed would be familiar enough that she'd sleep there, but that's just a guess.

So.  How did you do it?

  1. I have nothing to offer you. Jason was already sleeping in a bed when we started dating.

  2. Do you have the kind of crib that converts halfway, with a little railing on the side? That would probably be good because everything is the same except one smaller side..?

  3. We converted Allison's crib to a toddler bed right before her 3rd birthday. I did it when she was at school and she didn't have a choice - it was a safety issue (she was too big for crib). She got to pick out new sheets and that made it exciting enough. Jordan is already in a bed. Can't remember when we did that - want to say in July. She just wanted to be like Allison so it was an easy transition for her. Good luck!

  4. We had the converting type of crib and had to take off the side panel when our son was about 16 months, as he'd figured out how to scale the railing. We figured better to take off the side panel and have him fall 1 foot out of his crib than 4 feet from the top of the crib railing. We also had hardwood floors, so every night the floor around his converted crib was covered in couch cushions, LOL!

  5. I know it wasn't THAT long ago for us but I seriously don't remember what we did... I DO remember that it worked fine for a while, then he started getting out of bed so we put the railing back up so he couldn't get out. Maybe then he appreciated it and followed the rules when we took the railing back down into a normal bed :) I'm a bad person to ask anyway, though, since Patrick NEVER had a crib! Just our crazy bed contraption.

  6. I only had one crib, so once I got pregnant I would move the baby to a bed. That meant about 18mos the baby was in a bed. Easy way to come to the solution.
