You tell me

I just finished reading a book that a friend told me is the most depressing book she's read.  (No, it's not the one I was annoyed about being a series book.)  Here's the thing though-- I didn't think it was depressing.  It was sad, yes, but not depressing in my mind.  So here's what I want to know from you: what is the most depressing book you've ever read, and why does it top the list?

Sometime next week I'll tell you which book this was, and which books are on my most depressing list.

P.S.  I don't mean to BE depressing here, I'm just curious.

  1. The Memory Keeper's Daughter. ugh.

Any self help book. I think you know how I feel about them but just in case, who wants to read about how much you suck...

  2. Agreed with Kari. Second most depressing was Glass Castle, also true.

  3. I hate to read sad/ depressing books. If I'm going to spend time reading instead of sleeping I want it to be enjoyable/ relaxing/ informative.

That said, I recently read a Jody Picoult book called My Sister's Keeper. They're making a movie of it. It was sad throughout and had a depressing ending. It's the second book of hers that I've read. I can't say I'll choose a 3rd.

  4. My book club has been on a kick of extremely depressing books. I have about a dozen I could name but here's the top in my mind.

    1. Glass Castle
    2. Lovely Bones
    3. The Story of Edgar Sawtelle - this is just an awful book in general, I would only suggest it as a form of punishment.

  5. I just started re-reading Atlas Shrugged. Maybe disheartening would be a better word than depressing, but man I still see so many correlations with today's society--especially the economic "meltdown."
